Where the Wild Things Grow: A Horticultural Tribute to Maurice Sendak, opens March 19 at the H. P. Rawlings Conservatory

The H.P. Rawlings Conservatory's annual spring flower display runs March 19 - April 3, 2016, from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. (closed Mondays and Tuesdays).

Thousands of tulips, narcissus, hyacinths, and more, will bring a sea of color to the Conservatory display greenhouses.
The show is accompanied by an exhibition of artworks created by Jack Young, Art Director of the Enoch Pratt Free Library. The artworks, on loan from the library, recreate favorite scenes from Maurice Sendak's popular book - Where the Wild Things Are. Since 1963, adults and children alike have been captivated by the illustrations, featuring a forest springing to life in a child's bedroom, and imagined adventures across an ocean to the land of the Wild Things. The Conservatory is the perfect space to bring the book to life in Baltimore's own lush indoor forest.

The exhibit, on loan from the Pratt, was partially funded by a generous grant from the William G. Baker Jr. Memorial Fund.
More information available at the Conservatory's website.
Wishlist: Supplies
In addition to the set pieces on loan from the Pratt, Conservatory staff and volunteers will be creating a few objects to make the show an immersive experience.

* Foam Core - used is fine, as it will be painted
* Bedsheets, especially pale & pastel colors - second-hand is fine, and economical too

To donate materials, or to volunteer, please contact the Volunteer Coordinator.

See you at the show!

Revised By-Laws

2/26/2016

Attached is a draft revised set of by-laws and standing rules for the La Plata Garden Club. The existing by-laws and standing rules were revised to incorporate changes required by the Federated Garden Clubs of Maryland as well as items identified by the club and its members over the years. The revised by-laws and standing rules include new information about the organization's 501(c)3 status, conflict of interest information and insurance requirements, along with other changes. They also more accurately reflect the objectives and operations of our club.

The draft revised by-laws were prepared by a committee of three people appointed by the President at last year's executive board meeting. The 3 members researched, met, and discussed the by-laws and presented their revised draft to the Executive Board at this year's meeting on February 4, 2016. After discussion and recommendations, several changes were made and incorporated into the existing draft.  Via this email the draft of the revised by-laws and standing rules are now being submitted to the entire membership for review.

We will be discussing the by-laws at our March meeting, to be held March 31. Prior to the meeting, please review the attached draft and come prepared to ask any questions you may have and then vote on the by-laws.

Those of you who were present at last night's meeting received a printed copy of the by-laws that is the same as the attached draft.

If you have any questions, please send me an email or give me a call so we can discuss.

Thanks much,
Mary Grant

An Invitation from Homestead Gardens to the Garden Clubs in Maryland

2/26/2016

Homestead Gardens is inviting Maryland garden clubs to their Home and Garden Expo March 11-20. They are offering club members 20% off discount coupons, the only catch is that you need to call ahead to let them know you are coming so that they can have personalized coupons ready for garden club members.  We aren't going to try and organize a club trip so members should call on their own to arrange for receiving their discount coupons.

See the attached flyer for more information.

There is a presentation next Friday, March 4, at 7:00 at Battle Creek Cypress Swamp in Calvert County on NATIVE BEES. The presenter is Sam Droege of USGS Patuxent Wildlife Research Center.  Karen said that he is probably the world authority on the topic.
(PS: If anyone is interested in attending, Mary Ann would be interested in carpooling!)
