February Garden Club Meeting February 16

1/26/2017

Hi Gardeners-

Everything is now complete for our first meeting of the year.  It will be held on February 16,  (not our usual date) at the LaPlata Fire Hall at 7:00 p.m.   I am happy to tell you that it will be something completely different - IKEBANA- the art of Japanese flower arranging!

Our speaker will be Dr. Bruce Wilson, professor of Literature and Art History at St. Mary's College.  He introduces his students to Ikebana each year as part of his seminar on "Japanese Arts and Ways".  Dr. Wilson spends his summers in Japan studying Japanese flower arranging.  He has given presentations at the National Geographic Society, the Hillwood Museum and Gardens and the Walters Gallery.  He also offers instruction in this art form both on Capitol Hill and at his farm in Dameron, MD.  We are so lucky to have him as our speaker!

At our meeting, Dr. Wilson will create four arrangements, teaching us the principles of this Japanese technique.  I am very excited about this program and hope to see everyone there!  NO SNOW!!!

Calvert Garden Club is hosting a unique event to educate the public about floral designs, while also providing an opportunity for the  public to participate. On Saturday, January 28th from 10 am until noon at the Calvert Library in Prince Frederick, club members will show the steps needed to create a design based on a library book. These designs can be inspired by a component of a book, such as its title, cover or theme. The demonstration will feature basic floral design techniques, such as using tools, trimming and soaking oasis, preparing and selecting flowers for line and color.

If you are interested in participating in the event by either presenting a design or watching the demonstration, contact Vicki Geneva, Books in Bloom Chair, at 410.610.4905. There are no fees to attend, but  registration is required  through the library or line at www.calvertgardenclub.org.

The National Garden Clubs 88th Annual Convention will be held on May 18-20, 2017, in Richmond, VA.
If you have never attended a NGC Convention, this may be a perfect opportunity to experience a national meeting, since Richmond, VA, is relatively close.

Highlights include tours to Richmond, Williamsburg, and Monticello. There are national vendors. The keynote speaker is P. Allen Smith, whom many gardeners recognize through his beautiful books and his gardening programs on public television.

Please go to the NGC website www.gardenclub.org for more information and registration available under News and Events.

Dear Fellow La Plata Garden Club Members,

We are all looking forward to the “Garden Design” presentation by garden guru Kent Russell on Saturday, April 22, 2017.

The Hughesville and La Plata garden clubs will have one table each at this show with items for sale such as arts and crafts to raise funds for our respective clubs.   I have been asked to Chair our table and am asking for volunteers who would like to serve on this committee with me.  We are looking for your ideas, skills and contributions as well as your support.

If you are interested in serving on this committee and/or are able to help in any way, please let me know as soon as you can, my contact information is below.  I would love to meet with you and/or discuss ideas of the many ways we can use our skills and imagination and have fun presenting a table of  gifts that would attract any shopper.

 Thank you.

Now that the holidays are over and our lives have gotten back to normal, we can start to do those things we have been putting off or have forgotten during the holiday rush.  If you have not yet completed and returned your LPGC Membership Information Update and Photography Permission Forms -- the last two pages of our most previous newsletter -- could you please do so as soon as possible.  All club members need to complete and return the forms!
Although the forms were in the latest newsletter, I've attached them to this email for your convenience. It may be easier to print them from this email than from the newsletter.
If you have any questions or issues with these forms, you may call Mary Grant on 443-486-5373.
Please mail the forms to Mary Grant, 1756 Lottie Fowler Road, Prince Frederick, MD  20678.
Thanks.
