The La Plata Community Garden Club was formed in La Plata, Maryland in June of 2002. After the devastating winds from an F4 tornado ripped through the town La Plata on April 28, 2002, a small group of interested people began meeting and talking about forming the The La Plata Community Garden Club. As well as sharing a love of gardening and a desire to learn and teach about its many aspects, the organizers were interested in helping the area recover from the devastation caused by the tornado.

The La Plata Community Garden Club was accepted as a member of The Federated Garden Clubs of Maryland, Inc. in December of 2002.

On February 22, 2003, a ceremony inducting the first officers of the club was held at Town Hall in La Plata. Mae Scott, President of the Federated Garden Clubs of Maryland, Inc. along with District II Director Millie Sample, performed the induction ceremony honors, welcoming the officers and club members as members of the Maryland Federation.
